just because a television show doesn’t actively address a specific issue doesn’t mean they’re actively avoiding it either. you know what happens when you try to stuff every possible social debate under the sun into one show?

you get glee.

that’s what happens.

pettyrevenge:

My (ex) boyfriend wanted to see a sold out show to the foo fighters this summer. Him and his friends failed desperately in getting their hands on any tickets. I, however, managed to snag 2.

I waited until Christmas to give them to him and he was beyond excited. Jumping up and down excited. Fast forward 1.5 shitty months later and he dumped me 2 days before Valentines day after (literally) ignoring me for 3 weeks. The entire breakup blindsided me after 1.5 years together.

I haven’t talked to him since, but little does he know that I wasn’t quite finished with him yet. My brother just so happens to be a huge foo fighters fan as well…..I logged into my ticketmaster account and surprise surprise, tickets can be transferred. So my brother is going to have the time of his life while my ex boyfriend gets turned around at doors. Sucks to suck.

UPDATE: So, many of you wanted an update and here it is!

Concept: a relationship where you’re both equally obsessed with one another but still respect eachothers space. There is no lack of communication or trust. Lots of sex.

Someday…. I hope. Somedays I’m pretty sure they aren’t out there.

  • what she says: I'm fine.
  • what she means: Of all the superhero/action movie tropes that Deadpool subverts, the best one is the 'Hero Fights Bad Guy While the Love Interest is in Mortal Peril.' Usually the movie tracks between the final fight and the love interest suffering/in danger, with the outcome being she ends up more traumatized or even fridged for the hero's manpain. But in Deadpool, the first thing Wade does when he has an opening is to throw his sword into the oxygen deprivation tank Vanessa is locked in, disabling it so that he (and the audience) doesn't have to watch her go through the same torture he went through. Wade had a choice between ending the fight more quickly (leaving Vanessa to be tortured while he tried to kill Francis) and dragging it out longer to make sure the love of his life wasn't in pain, and he chose the second option. When has your favourite movie ever.

Gotta say something real quick about Zootopia

international-asian:

I love this movie like holy shit I love it so much.

Obviously it deals with discrimination, institutional racism, intersectionality, all of which I live for. I also thought it was ballsy but VERY poignant to show that Judy, even though she faced discrimination every day and fought to work, live, and excel in a world LITERALLY not built for her, SHE also had strong prejudices that hurt her relationship with Nick. It’s so important to acknowledge that marginalized groups are not necessarily saints, and come with their own fears. Hers wasn’t even born of ignorance, really. She was actually attacked by a fox before.

Which brings me to the one critique I’ve seen of the movie that I had to ruminate over for a bit. Sure, predators and prey were portrayed as evolved beyond needing to kill and eat each other. But in a film that’s supposed to show the harmful effects of prejudice, why did they make the minority group actual, literal predators? When applied to a greater social context, isn’t it problematic to say minorities=predators?

Here’s my response to that. One, yes, it would be, except that there’s one key factor I think got overlooked. All the savage predators we saw were male. This film is ALL about analyzing how people handle discrimination, but I think the gender dynamic was overlooked a little bit. Here’s the thing: Lionhart was male/a predator, and in a position of institutional power. So when he found out only predators were going savage, he had them locked up and hidden from the community in order to study them. He DEFINITELY should have told the population what was going on, but as revealed in his conversation with the research badger (I think it was a badger?) he knew he would lose political standing by being associated with the dangerous mammals. So, he hides them, which is what Bellweather, a female/prey predicted he would do. So then Bellweather harnessed the fear caused by these events (WHICH SHE INSTIGATED) to pit the prey against the predators, which as a sweeping generalization had historically wronged them. Seeing Bellweather, a female who is also prey, holding the seat of Mayor galvanized the prey in a (misguided) retaliation against predators.

So what does this have to do with gender? The fact that this falls along gender lines is no accident, I think. Judy is a rabbit who carries fox repellant after an incident with a fox in her past. What does that sound like in the real world? Nick is offended and hurt by this, because he too has been attacked. But he was attacked for BEING WHAT HE IS, a predator. He never hurt anyone, but he feels disillusioned about ever proving anyone wrong, so he purposefully fulfilled stereotypes about his species. He feels like there’s no point in exerting the effort to prove he’s better than that. This is more of a race thing than a gender one, to be fair, but that coping mechanism is really important to grasp. Many minorities understand stereotypes about themselves from a young age, and they are forced to choose between subverting and conforming. That’s not an easy choice, and while choosing to subvert is brave and admirable (see Judy), it is certainly not easy and comes with dangers and anxiety. This is ALSO TRUE when applied to gender conformity. Imagine that the Rangers were girl scouts and Nick just a boy who really wanted to sell cookies. He didn’t care about the fact that they were girls. But because girls are historically endangered by the presence of males, the Rangers struck preemptively, in the manner that cruel children tend to. Nick is disillusioned, and made hyperaware of what it is about him that causes violence to be done on him. If he CONFORMS to the expectations of his species, he won’t be hurt.

Being male in today’s society does NOT make you dangerous, any more than predators in Zootopia are. But that dynamic of fear on a hair-trigger is comparable, ESPECIALLY if harnessed by political figures in order to gain power.

This is really rambling but TL;DR, I think Zootopia was really good about showing the complexities of discrimination and prejudice. It doesn’t make marginalized populations into saints, and doesn’t make the majority into demons. But it does show what hurdles minorities are forced to deal with that others don’t have to. And it addresses intersectional minorities with great sensitivity.

Also, PS, Bellweather is Hillary Clinton.
